MOUNT ST. JOSEPH UNIVERSITY NEWS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CINCINNATI, Ohio (May 10, 2018) – The Summer Employment Program (SEP) at Mount St. Joseph University is again being made possible through a generous grant by the SC Ministry Foundation, which promotes the mission and ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. This is the 13th consecutive year the program has received the grant. The Summer Employment Program gives students experience working with nonprofit organizations as well as helps them pay for their education. The organizations benefit through the additional staff support in helping them carry out their missions.
The Summer Employment Program allows Mount students in various fields of study to gain hands-on professional experience, and develop integral job skills. The top five represented majors are Biology, Nursing, Business Administration, Psychology, and Social Work. The program has had a 97.3 percent retention rate of student participants since 2014. In addition, 93.4 percent of participants have reported an increase in professional skills, and 89 percent have reported an increase in awareness of the nonprofit sector.
Linda Pohlgeers, director of the Mount’s Career and Experiential Education Center manages the program. Two of the current principal goals are to connect students to jobs related to their majors and promote consideration of career opportunities in the nonprofit sector upon graduation.
Santa Maria Community Services has partnered with the Mount on the Summer Employment Program for almost eight years. Jim Holmstrom, the Youth Development Program Director, has valued the experience. “Having such a small staff, our Youth Program has been tremendously enhanced by the Mount’s assistance,” he said, “Everyone benefits from the arrangement – the staff, students, and most importantly, the kids. We even have former Mount student employees who still volunteer with us!”
