Committing to Climate Change

Mission & Ministry

By: Kathleen Cardwell

Dr. Williams joined more than 150 leaders of Catholic universities, religious orders, and organizations in signing a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump and Congress. The letter specifically supports the reassertion of U.S. Leadership in the global effort to address climate change.

The letter from Catholic Climate Covenant, dated November 16, calls for acting upon the best available climate science and honoring U.S. commitments to the Green Climate Fund. Founded in the Catholic Church's commitment to Earth, the letter also urges funding and participation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The letter quotes Paul VI, "Man is suddenly becoming aware that by an ill-considered exploitation of nature he risks destroying it and becoming in his turn the victim of this degradation," and further adds how his successors, Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis, have "advanced the Church's call for us to care for creation, a tenet of Catholic Social Teaching."
